How to Raid Your Boyfriend’s Closet (or Just Look Like You Did)

Don’t even try to tell us you haven’t worn any of your guy’s clothes (to clear the air, we are not talking about his skinny jeans, but if that were the case, perhaps you should be having a talk with him). Even if it’s just one of his T-shirts to sleep in, there’s just something so appealing about wearing his stuff. Boys clothes are comfortable…period, and on us ladies, the look is effortlessly sexy.
It’s no wonder why menswear-inspired style’s been so hot these past few years. Style icons, too, are no strangers to boyfriend dressing: think Patti Smith and Kate Moss (pictured above, far right). And your favorite kind of jacket’s called a “boyfriend blazer,” isn’t it?
Here, we’ve listed the kinds of key pieces to incorporate into your wardrobe that look like they were stolen right from his—granted, of course, his closet isn’t just a clutter of sweatpants and basketball shorts. (Also, don’t worry if you don’t have a boy to steal from—all the below pieces are available online!).

For blazers, go for a slouchy fit, like this one from Topshop ($130,topshop.com). Wear a casual T-shirt underneath and tuck into men’s-style trousers (with a skinny leather belt, see photo above) or skinny jeans.

Check out the men’s section at stores like Old Navy for classic button-up shirts ($20, oldnavy.com), and wear them oversized over skinny pants.

A letterman or varsity jacket ($59.50, delias.com) is the perfect pullover for fall. Go for one without too many patches for versatility.

A roomy wool sweater in a collegiate, straightforward color like heather gray, brown, or navy ($89.90, uniqlo.com) goes great over tights and boots. Wear a denim or plaid button-up shirt underneath and peek out the collar. (Disclaimer: wear shorts over the tights!)

The white crew neck T-shirt is a key staple ($38, mrporter.com). Wear it with jeans, of course, but for a feminine touch, roll up the cuffs to bare your ankles and slip on a pair of heels. Throw on a brightly colored cardigan or chunky sweater.

Who doesn’t love a pair of cords? Go for straight leg ($70, gap.com) and wear with heels or boots.

A pair of high-waisted trousers ($85, topshop.com) is perfect for your internship (and your interview!). Tuck in a fitted tank or a pussy-bow blouse, and top it off with a cropped jacket or blazer.

Socks ($11, madewell.com)! The thicker, the better.

Another classic staple: The penny loafer ($65, kohls.com). Go for genuine leather, since these bad boys will last a lifetime.

Stake out an iconic pair of kicks, but with a stylish flair, like these leather Jack Purcells ($60, converse.com).

Trade in your Uggs for a more rustic boot option, like these desert boots by Clarks ($100, nordstrom.com).

A thick, hand-knit beanie (nobis.ca) is a good reason to never spend timestyling your hair again, and you don’t have to hit the slopes to wear one.

Throw everything in an all-business leather or canvas tote ($45, asos.com).
