BiBi McGrill: Female Guitarist & A Force To Be Reckoned With!

In Iconic GIRLS on October 3, 2011 at 5:18 am
The fast-emerging phenom known as Bibi McGill (center) picked up her first guitar at age twelve. Growing up, her earliest inspirations were the retro seventies’ grooves of Earth, Wind and Fire, Mandrill, and the Commodores. The Isley Brothers was her first concert. As she listened and learned to single out the guitar in music, she started schooling herself in the harder, rock-based sounds. At first, bands such as Heart, Led Zeppelin, and The Eagles fed her developing fury. Next came Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Pantera, and Judas Priest. Randy Rhodes, Ozzy Osbourne’s original guitarist, was-and still is-Bibi’s all-time favorite! For the Colorado native, these jams were just the beginning of an awesome journey past making-it milestones and musical frontiers.
After graduating from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Scoring and Arranging, Bibi took off for California and hit the local club circuit. Pounding the pavement in Los Angeles, playing at clubs such as The Viper Room and The Whiskey, was as rough as it was exciting. At times, Bibi could barely make the rent going from gig to gig. At the same time, she was developing a full-tilt, aggressive energy in her performances that was catching on and drawing a following.
Musically, by then she had opened herself to a wide range of inspirations: from individual artists such as Korn, Goodie Mob, Madonna, and John P. Kee, to whole genres of music-House, Electronic, World, Hip-Hop, R&B, and Gospel. Financially, however, she needed to make a move. At first hesitant to get involved with the Hollywood actors’ scene, Bibi could no longer ignore those who had seen her on stage and who kept encouraging her to get an agent, not just for music but also for acting and modeling. She decided she had nothing to lose in checking it out.
To her surprise, she was quickly scooped up by Dragon Talent and Dragon Models-an agency in Los Angeles that specializes in alternative, edgy people-and began working immediately. Scoring principal roles in a half-dozen national commercials, including Motorola, Nike, and Heineken, she finally had a source of income that enabled her to fine-tune her guitar skills and take her music to the next level.
In 2001, Bibi’s career in music erupted. She hooked up with Pink for her promotional tour in November and started blazing the stages of London, Spain, Singapore, Germany, and Australia with her high-voltage licks and stage moves. She continued the tour onto high-profile TV shows, including Saturday Night Live, MTV’s Total Request Live, the Billboard Music Awards, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Britain’s Top of the Pops. She wailed into 2002 with Pink at the one and only Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve. Quickly on the heels of Pink’s promo tour, Bibi took to the road once more, this time with “The Mexican Madonna” Paulina Rubio to play the opening slot for the Enrique Iglesias tour.
When not touring, Bibi plays guitar for the Full Gospel Mass Choir at a little church in South Central Los Angeles. By playing locally and touring with bands, Bibi has learned to play nearly every style of music. The music Bibi herself writes reflects all of her influences yet leans unmistakably toward the heavier, harder side of sound. Keep an eye out for this dynamic performer. On a stage near you, she’ll be kicking ass.
