Iconic GIRL To Know: Susan Gregg Koger (Creator of Modcloth.com)

In Iconic GIRLS on October 31, 2011 at 12:53 pm
When ModCloth founder Susan Gregg Koger was in high school, she spent weekends thrift shopping for unique vintage finds. She found herself snatching up great pieces that weren’t necessarily her size, but that she couldn’t pass up. When she went away to college at Carnegie Mellon University, she had a dorm room full of amazing clothes and accessories. So, at 17-years old, she decided to start an online shop with her boyfriend-turned-husband, Eric Koger.

Susan quickly realized there were many girls like her who wanted to express their personal style with one-of-a-kind and unique apparel. When her small dorm room was bursting at the seams with retro garb, Susan and Eric decided to set up shop in a house that doubled as their living space and office. They increased their inventory to feed their customers’ hunger for retro clothing, selling vintage-inspired items from indie designers, as well as continuing to provide shoppers with one-of-a-kind vintage pieces. Today, ModCloth has grown into a thriving business of over 100 employees, yet the small-business feel remains. Susan can still be found out on the road finding the most unique pieces possible for ModShoppers, and she’s still encouraging women everywhere to express their personal style!

Zooey Deschanel On ‘New Girl’ Role And Reality TV

In Entertainment and Celebrity on October 31, 2011 at 11:00 am

FOX’s hit “New Girl” is officially one of this TV season’s breakout shows and star Zooey Deschanel is simply on cloud nine. Born into a showbiz family — mom Mary Jo is an actress, dad Caleb is an Oscar-nominated cinematographer and big sis Emily stars on “Bones” — the actress brings her off-kilter goofiness and hipster cred to the new show. The 31-year-old actress also has a beautiful singing voice and is half of the musical duo “She & Him.”
Deschanel spoke to The Huffington Post about the dangers of actors trying to sing and her deep love for the “Real Housewives” series.

So this is a big deal, starring in your own show. Do you feel like Mary Tyler Moore?
Oh my gosh, I feel so happy, it’s so nice, I’m having the best time working on this show. It’s a dream come true. I didn’t set out for this at all. I had actually taken a couple of years off acting. I was doing my music, touring with my band. I was sort of looking for the next thing to do but I hadn’t really thought about doing a network show. I’d been looking for interesting characters which is very hard to find, and if you do it’s often the smallest part in a movie. But I’d sort of put myself in that mindset that if I wanted to play interesting characters, I would just have to take small parts and be ok with that, and then I got this script and I fell in love with the character. I told them I was interested and they offered me the part. It happened very quickly.

Your sister Emily is a successful actress. Did you ever compete for roles?
No, she has a very different vibe from me. She’s the strong but sensitive one; I was always the one who was a little bit more goofy and silly and clown-like. We never went out for the same parts.

You’re both on the FOX studio lot. Ever carpool or meet up for lunch?
Film and TV schedules break for lunch six hours after crew call, which changes every day and it’s different on every production. We’re on the same lot but it’s way more complicated to see each other than you think. She’s also on maternity leave right now.

What TV do you watch?
I’m into a lot of reality shows. I love the “Real Housewives” — especially the Beverly Hills one — and I love “Top Chef” and “Intervention.”

On finding out she as pregnant:
It’s funny, we weren’t trying, I just looked in the mirror one morning at my body and it looked different. My breasts were bigger, I stood in front of my husband and said, “Honey, I think I’m pregnant.”
On how pregnancy has changed her life:
I didn’t have any morning sickness, everything has been extremely well. The only thing I changed was that I stopped working out. All of our friends are like, “You guys are just getting started while our [kids] are off to college,” but it’s like I lived my life, I’ve taken trips to Paris for just 30 hours and came back, I’ve popped bottles, I’ve done it all, now I’m just ready and looking forward to being a mom.
On what she loves most about being married:
I have never been so in love before in my life. There’s nothing that I like least about it. I can sit in silence with him, we can do everything together. Everything is just really really easy and that’s how it is suppose to be.

What’s With The Coconut Water Craze: Are the Health Benefits Worth the High Cost?

In Health on October 28, 2011 at 9:44 am
Coconut water seems to be taking over the shelves of every supermarket, drugstore and bodega these days. This beverage has rapidly shot to health drink fame, claiming to be a superior source of hydration. But does this “life enhancing” drink live up to the hype (and the hefty price tag)? We break it down for you here.
What is coconut water, exactly?
Coconut water is the liquid that is found inside young coconuts before they mature, at which point the water solidifies to form the flesh of the coconut. Native to the tropics, coconut water can be drunk directly from freshly harvested fruit. The commercial coconut water that you find in the U.S., often sold in bottles and tetra packs, is pasteurized and may have added pulp.
What’s in it?
Nutrient content varies slightly from brand to brand, but coconut water is naturally low in calories and fat-free. A serving has about the same amount of potassium as a banana and it is low in sodium. It also has a small amount of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Brands that add ascorbic acid as a preservative provide a good source of vitamin C. Fruit-flavored coconut water is also available and these varieties have slightly more calories and sugar due to the added fruit.
Are there any health benefits?
The high potassium and low sodium content of coconut water has a nutrient profile shown to help lower high blood pressure. However, this drink alone isn’t going to do the trick. Broader diet and lifestyle changes are needed to curb hypertension. And getting your nutrients from whole foods is usually a better idea anyway, to make sure you get all their health-boosting fiber and antioxidants.
Is Coconut Water Better Than Sports Drinks After Exercising?
Some brands of coconut water are marketed as “sports drinks,” claiming to be a low-cal way to replace the electrolytes lost in sweat. While potassium and sodium do need to be replaced after heavy exercise, those of us who go to the gym for an hour or so won’t lose enough to require a special drink – regular tap water works just fine to rehydrate. And, some sports nutritionists say the sodium in coconut water isn’t enough for serious athletes.
Bottom Line, Drink Up
Coconut water can certainly be part of a healthy diet, and if you like the taste, then drink up. After all, it’s certainly better for you than sugary sodas. But for my money, I’ll stick with the water I’m lucky enough to have piped directly into my home.

The “Staying Alive” campaign made by MTV, focuses on eliminating the terrible stigma of HIV. Some of its ambassadors include Travie McCoy, Kelly Rowland and Shawn Decker and now it has some new members: Keri Hilson and Jamal Edwards.
Both new ambassadors were given the task to inspire young people to join the fight against HIV, while also using their own platforms to spread the word.
A few days ago, Keri was interviewed by Verge Magazine Online to talk about her new position as an ambassador for the campaign and how she wants to help the youth in this battle against HIV. “It has become such a compartmentalized thing, but when you look at the statistics, they say that 33 million people around the world and 2500 of our youth, ages 15-24, get infected every single day. I would say, speak up! If you’re not infected or affected, do your research. Go online and empower yourself. Fill yourself with the knowledge. You never know when you’ll encounter it. It’s an epidemic”, she said.
